St. Louis Cemetery #1
Saint Louis Cemetery is the name of three Catholic cemeteries in New Orleans, Louisiana. Most of the graves are above-ground vaults constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Cemeteries No. 1 and No. 2 are included on the National Register of Historic Places and the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail.
St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the oldest and most famous. It was opened in 1789, replacing the city's older St. Peter Cemetery (no longer in existence) as the main burial ground when the city was redesigned after a fire in 1788.
This is one of the most interesting cemeteries that I have ever been in. Of course it would be in the city of New Orleans, one of the most interesting and favorite city's that I have ever been too.
Being just outside of the french quarter it is an easy walk to go see the cemetery and it is definitely a must see at least one time while visiting New Orleans. I believe in all my dozens of trips to NOLA I may have been to this cemetery 4 or 5 times. and with each trip see something new, though the cemetery is hundreds of years old.
When you do visit be sure to bring an offering for Marie Laveau, the renowned Voodoo Princess. While know one knows for sure where she is actually interred in the cemetery and I have been told multiple locations by tour guides and individuals you will see in the pictures that people have decisively picked out a grave to leave the offerings.
Hope everyone enjoys the pictures.
